Walter SmithThe Rev. Dr. Walter J. Smith, S.J. has served as President and CEO of HealthCare Chaplaincy since September 1993, after serving as its executive vice president since July 1991. Father Smith joined The Chaplaincy’s senior management team after a distinguished academic career, which included university and professional school teaching and administration. As a clinician, Father Smith specialized in end-of-life care and has published numerous articles and two books in this field. He serves as a trustee of several national non-profit health care and advocacy organizations and institutions of higher learning. 


Claire Haaga Altman Claire Haaga Altman, Executive Vice President and COO, has been leading entrepreneurial projects in the non profit sector for over 30 years. Claire developed the paratransit system for persons with disabilities +nyc (now access a ride), a construction company employing ex-offenders, and a housing development company that developed over $250 million of affordable housing. Claire served on the HealthCare Chaplaincy board before joining the staff in the fall of 2008 to lead the development of HealthCare Chaplaincy's new headquarters and innovative assisted living residence.


Bob WolfRobert Wolf, Senior Vice President for Innovation and Development, is an expert in geriatrics. Bob has been the senior advisor to the SC Group, one of the country’s most important philanthropic foundations in the field of geriatrics, and most recently has served as director of special projects at AARP Foundation. For 20 years prior, Bob was the executive director of medical and geriatric programs for UJA Federation in New York City.  He has also had a distinguished career in law, and was one of the first attorneys to specialize in elder law.


Carl MarucciCarl Marucci, Vice President for Advancement, has a 20 year history of successful fund raising and leadership in institutional advancement. He served as executive director at Community Counseling Services Fund Raising, that advises and manages the capital campaigns of numerous nonprofit academic, health care, human services, religious and cultural organizations. Carl was also executive director of the Path to Peace Foundation, and served as a diplomatic attaché of the Vatican to the United Nations.


George HandzoThe Rev. George Handzo, Senior Consultant, Chaplaincy Care Leadership & Practice,
has been a part of HealthCare Chaplaincy for over three decades, first as a chaplain at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center, and later as an esteemed member of the Chaplaincy’s management team. He is a board certified chaplain and a certified lean six sigma black belt. George is the co-principal investigator of the research project funded by the John Templeton Foundation which will grow the field of chaplaincy research in palliative care. In addition, he is collaborating on the educational project leading to professional chaplains’ certification in the subspecialty of palliative care supported by grants from the Arthur Vining Davis and Retirement Research Foundations. The Association of Professional Chaplains, where he served as both president and national chair of certification, in 2011 gave him its highest honor – the Anton Boisen Professional Service Award.


John A. Piontkowski John A. Piontkowski, CPA has joined HealthCare Chaplaincy as chief financial officer. Previously John was chief operating officer and chief financial officer of GAMCO Asset Management Inc. in Rye, New York, a $12 billion division of a publicly-held investment management firm.  John has served as executive vice president and chief financial officer of Smith Corona Corporation in New Canaan, CT; executive vice president & chief financial officer for Meta Group in Stamford, CT; and COO & CFO of JupiterKagan, Inc.  John brings substantial skills in analysis, planning, management and consulting.  He has exercised corporate leadership with governing and advisory boards and has broad managerial experience in finance, legal, human resources, facilities, IT, treasury, risk management and internal audit. 


Edward HaranEdward Haran, Director, Human Resources and Administration has held senior  positions in human resources at SUNY Stony Brook, Queensborough Community College, Southampton Hospital and Eastern Long Island Hospital. He joined HealthCare Chaplaincy in February 2005.


Jim Siegel Jim Siegel, Director of Marketing & Communications, has more than 30 years of experience in the private and not-for-profit sectors. Previously he was program director for the online Parents Resource Center at the Partnership for a Drug-Free America and senior vice president at Young & Rubicam. Jim has served on the boards of the substance abuse treatment and prevention organization Veritas, and Marketing Executives Networking Group, and has been an active volunteer as a congregant at Central Synagogue in Manhattan.
